Capital One Acquires Discover: What Cardholders Must Know in 2026

Capital One just bought Discover. Here's exactly what changes for 70M+ cardholders.

What Happened

Capital One completed its $35 billion acquisition of Discover Financial in early 2026, creating the largest credit card company in the US by loan volume — surpassing JPMorgan Chase.

The deal combines Capital One's 100M+ customers with Discover's 70M+ cardholders and, critically, Discover's payment network infrastructure.

What Changes for Discover Cardholders

Short term (now): Nothing. Your card still works everywhere. Your rewards still accumulate. Your account terms are unchanged.

Medium term (6–18 months): Expect communications about account migration, potential product changes, and possible shifts in rewards structures. Capital One is required to maintain existing terms for a transition period.

Long term: Discover cards will likely be absorbed into the Capital One product lineup. The Discover it® cards may be rebranded or consolidated with Capital One equivalents.

What Changes for Capital One Cardholders

The bigger story is Capital One gaining ownership of the Discover payment network — the fourth-largest in the US behind Visa, Mastercard, and Amex.

This means Capital One can eventually route its own cards through the Discover network instead of paying Visa/Mastercard interchange fees. Lower costs = potentially better rewards or lower rates for cardholders.

Should You Do Anything Right Now?

No. Keep using your Discover card normally. Monitor your email for official communications from Capital One/Discover. Don't close your account preemptively — that hurts your credit score and gains you nothing.

The Bottom Line

This is a long-term structural shift in the US credit card market. For individual cardholders, the immediate impact is minimal. The long-term impact — better or worse — depends on how Capital One integrates the Discover network and product line over the next 2–3 years.
